Development Update - 30 November

Hey everyone,

So it's been a little while since I've touched base with all of you. Development had unfortunately slowed down due to health concerns (not major) and increasing responsibility at work. I'm back at it again, and am happy to share some new information with you.

As some of you may know, you are able to view an in-progress changelog that I add onto during the day here. These changes are not yet in the game, but I make it public so the community can weigh in their opinions before a release hits. The reason I'm bringing this up is because (before my short hiatus) I removed the hunger system completely from the game. After several months of deliberation and asking for opinions, I came to the conclusion that it did not add enough to the game to justify its inclusion. It had been implemented very early on in development, when Axu's world didn't gain difficulty over time, and a "clock" of some kind seemed like a good idea to keep players on their toes. In reality, filling up your inventory with food items to be able to spend any time away from town really doesn't capture the feeling I want for the game. So coming up in 0.7.1, hunger and food will not be present. I hope that this decision won't cause too much of a fuss.

With that out of the way, let's talk about some other progress. Aside from various bug reports and a couple of new features, the biggest undertaking of the moment is a complete overhaul of the quest system. For years, I've been fighting bugs in an ever-growing mass of code with my very quick and dirty implementation. Quests sometimes didn't update, they lost track of your destination, didn't remember who you were supposed to talk to, and so on. I am hoping that bugs will be reduced my a great amount, or at least easier to diagnose and fix. I'm aiming to include this overhaul in 0.7.1, which should be out within the next couple of weeks. (Fingers crossed) Keep in mind that many quests will be fundamentally changed, removed, or pushed to other parts of the story to facilitate this change. I hope that the quality of each will improve as well, since I should have a better set of tools to tell a story with.

Anyways, thank you for reading. Remember to drop by the Discord if you'd like to more easily talk about Axu with some cool people.

Cheers,

Matt (Cynapse)
